Whitman student wins 1K college scholarship from Comcast
Hanson - At a special ceremony held recently at the massachusetts state House, Comcast was joined by state legislators to honor Whitman-Hanson regional high school graduating senior Brett Loycano and 104 other college-bound students with $1,000 Leaders and achievers scholarships from the Comcast Foundation.
Loycano, who lives in Whitman, will attend Northeastern University in the Fall.
The comcast leaders and achievers scholarship program, one of the Comcast Foundation’s signature community investment programs, annually recognizes students who have shown leadership skills, academic achievement and a commitment to community service.
“Each year, we are excited to provide Leaders and achievers scholarships to talented students like Brett who demonstrate leadership in school activities and a strong commitment to community service,” said Steve hackley, senior vice president for Comcast’s Greater boston region. “Given the economic uncertainty facing families across Massachusetts and our nation, this year’s awards take on even greater significance and we are proud to participate in a small way to help these future leaders power their dreams for success.”
A commitment to community service is an essential component in the selection of comcast leaders and achievers scholarship recipients. Loycano and all of this year’s honorees are catalysts for positive change in their communities and schools, participating in a wide variety of community service activities. Loycano’s community service work has included participation in school clean ups and volunteering his time with the elderly.
Nationally, 1,879 high school seniors received $1,000 Comcast Leaders and achievers Scholarships this year, including 170 from New England. In the nine years since the program began, Comcast has awarded $11 million in college aid to 11,000 scholarship winners.
Each year, Comcast works with high school principals, guidance counselors and school administrators to select the scholarship recipients. The program is overseen by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc., an independent firm that specializes in managing sponsored scholarship programs.
