University students' underwear dash damages historic fountain

Taking a page from UCLA, students at chapman university decided to have their own "underwear dash" -- this time around the historic traffic circle in orange. But city officials say the partying got out of hand -- and it might cost the university $19,000. More from the O.C. Register:

city officials say the cost to repair the 71-year-old fountain in the traffic circle broken by frolicking chapman university students during last week's undie run could reach $19,000.

The fountain was broken during the non-sanctioned tradition early last thursday morning, where approximately 1,500 students stripped to their underwear and ran from Memorial Hall to Plaza Park, in the center of the traffic center, and back.

Many students stopped to play in the calf-high pool surrounding the fountain. Several decided to climb into the fountain itself.

"chapman university has worked very hard this year to improve relations between our students and our neighbors, and we are very sorry for this momentary setback," [Chapman president james] doti said in a statement last week.
