Fire displaces students at U-M dorm

A small fire occurred monday night in Mary markley hall on the university of michigan’s campus.

The fire, which occurred at 10:40 p.m., was contained in one room and was quickly put out by the fire suppression system. No one was injured because the students were on fall study break Monday and today.

According to housing communications director peter logan, up to about 26 rooms were affected with water damage, 16 of those rooms having significant water damage and the rest being minor. The room where the fire started is said to have some smoke damage, a small amount of fire damage and significant water damage.

The building is on Washington Heights between the central and medical campuses.

A total of 49 students were affected with most of the 26 rooms having two students assigned to them.

“We haven’t fully determined how many students will be fully displaced by this; last night it was approximately eight students,” Logan said.

An e-mail notice to all residence hall students in markley hall was sent early this morning that gave information on what wing was affected and encouraged them to contact the community center for more information. That e-mail was followed up with direct e-mails to those students who have been directly affected by water damage, minor or significant.

There will be a meeting with students today regarding relocation and any questions they may have regarding cleaning belongings or reporting to insurance companies.

“We’ll make sure they have a dry place and the information they need to keep moving on and we’re very pleased that there were no injuries and the fire suppression system did what it was supposed to do, very quickly,” Logan said.
