414 Iowa college students get disaster aid
state officials say more than 400 students attending iowa colleges received disaster relief grants to help pay college expenses.
Keith greiner of the iowa college student aid commission says the awards, averaging $1,200, were given to students who were impacted by natural disasters in Iowa this year.
He spoke Wednesday to the Rebuild Iowa advisory commission's education task force which met in des moines.
greiner says the state received more than 700 applications for the $500,000 in disaster aid. The final 414 recipients were from 45 counties.
greiner says the student awards were based on family loss from the disasters and financial need.
He says there were 169 grant recipients attending iowa community colleges, 112 enrolled at regent universities and 99 attending private colleges and universities in iowa.
