Student gets anaesthetised and robbed

melbourne police are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old student was attacked, anaesthetised and robbed on his way to an exam early this morning.

An Indian student named only as "Sam", who has lived in melbourne for 18 months, was waiting for a bus at the corner of st kilda road and Barkley St, St Kilda, about 6.30am (aest) when the incident occurred.

detective Senior constable Mark sontag said it was believed someone approached Sam from behind and put something over his head which led to him losing consciousness.

The next thing he remembers is waking up and finding his mobile phone and wallet, containing cash and cards, missing.

"It's extremely unusual, I've never seen this method used before in the execution of an armed robbery," detective sontag said.

"And it's something that I don't want to see occur again."

Sam said he remembered smelling something and being very scared.

"I gave up and thought maybe I'm going to die," he said.

He was on his way to an exam at Latrobe University, where he is doing a masters degree in finance.

"I was really shocked and scared ... and unthinkable because I have to go to uni early in the morning and late at night so I'm really scared now."
